3D Studio Max Model a Tank Part 09


Hi everyone, welcome to today’s continuation of the multi-part tutorial on modeling of a tank. This is the 9th part of a multi-part tutorial on creating a military tank. Today, we look at using editable spline, mirror tool, and lathe modifier to create wheels for our tank.

Create box to use as a guide for creating shape for lathing tank wheel

1. select Geometry tab, and click box button

2. click and drag out a box in left viewport

3. change length and width to 44, and height to 34, and length segs, width segs, height segs to 2

Create shape to use for lathing tank wheel

1. select Shape tab, and click line button

2. click at specific points, using box obj as a guide (see video), to create upper half of the cross-sectional shape of the tank wheel

Use lathe modifier to create tank wheel

1. select Lathe modifier from modifier list

2. click + sign beside Lathe, in modifier stack, and select Axis subobject

3. press W, to select move tool

4. click and drag axis till its at point just before hole starts to appear (see video)

note: in case, you cannot see the object clearly, try checking Flip Normals checkbox, to flip your normals

Create instances of wheels for the tank

1. press W, to select move tool

2. in front view, click and drag wheel obj

3. select Object type of Instance, change Number of copies to 7, click OK

4. move wheel instances to appropriate positions, based on reference image in front view

5. select all wheel instances on the current side of the tank

6. click mirror button

7. select mirror axis of Y, click and drag to change offset value, till the new mirrored instances are positioned at the appropriate position, as shown based on reference image in left viewport
