3D Studio Max Model a Tank Part 04
Hi everyone, welcome to today’s continuation of the multi-part tutorial on modeling of a tank. This is the fourth part of a multi-part tutorial on creating a military tank. Today, we look at using extrusion, slice plane, and vertex editing mode to modify the bottom of the tank, to more closely conform with the reference image.
1. right-click perspective viewport
2. press Alt + middle-mouse button, to arc rotate perspective view, to see bottom of the tankbody object
3. right-click left viewport
4. select tankbody object
5. select modify tab
6. click + sign beside Editable Poly, and select Polygon, to enter polygon editing mode
7. click and drag a selection marquee to select polygon at the bottom of the tankbody object
8. right-click selected polygon in the perspective view, and select Extrude dialog box
9. click and drag button for extrusion height, till it matches the reference image in left viewport, then click OK
10. click slice plane (from modify panel)
11. press E, to select rotate tool
12. ensure angle snap is toggled on
13. right-click left viewport
14. click and drag rotate tool gizmo, to rotate slice plane 90 degrees
15. press W, to select move tool
16. move the slice plane to where the reference image shows a change in outline of the bottom of the tank
17. click slice button, to add edge and corresponding vertices to at current position of the slice plane on the selected polygon
18. move the slice plane to where the reference image shows another change in outline of the bottom of the tank
19. click slice button, to add edge and corresponding vertices to at current position of the slice plane on the selected polygon
20. click editable poly, and click vertex, to return to vertex editing mode
21. click empty point in left viewport, to de-select currently selected vertices
22. click and drag selection marquee around the appropriate 2 sets of vertices at the bottom of the tankbody object
23. select move tool
24. move selected set of vertices downwards, to more closely conform to the outline shown by the reference image
