3D Studio Max Model a Tank Part 02

Hi everyone, welcome to today’s tutorial on creating a model of a tank. This is the second part of a multi-part tutorial on creating a military tank. Today, we look at using vertex editing mode, using cut tool, extrusion, and target welding of vertices to help create tapered ’skirt’ for the tank.

Cut vertical lines with cut tool, at key points of tank body outline:

1. select tankbody object

2. select modify tab of command panel

3. select vertex editing mode

4. click on cut button (shown in modify panel)

5. click on appropriate vertices (where tank outline varies significantly) of top of tankbody object, and drag, and click on the below line, to form vertical lines (see video)

note: right-click after clicking a source and then a destination vertex, to create a single vertical line, before trying to create another vertical line

6. click cut button again, to toggle off cut mode

Extrude ’skirt’ of tank:

1. select polygon editing mode

2. ensure windowed selection mode is selected

3. in left viewport, click and drag a marquee to select polygons on side of tank, to be extruded to form the ’skirt’

note: selected polygons are red in colour

4. right-click selected polygons, and select Extrude dialog box

5. select extrusion type of Group

6. increase extrusion height till front of tankbody shows that the extrusion now fills the outline of the ’skirt’ of the tank, as shown by the reference image in left viewport, and click OK

7. press Alt and click and drag selection marquee around the ‘upper’ set of polygons in front view, to de-selected upper set of polygons, leaving only the ‘lower’ set of polygons

8. right-click selected polygons, and select Extrude dialog box

9. select extrusion type of Group

10. increase extrusion height till front of tankbody shows that the extrusion now fills the outline of the ’skirt’ of the tank, as shown by the reference image in left viewport, and click OK

Target weld vertices to create tapered edge for the tank ’skirt’:

1. select tankbody object

2. select vertex editing mode

3. in perspective view, select source vertex

4. right-click selected vertex, and select Target Weld

5. click and drag till over destination vertex to be welded together with source vertex

6. repeat step#3 to step#5, for each appropriate set of source and destination vertices (see video)
