Configure TCP IP Settings for DNS

Hi everyone, welcome to today’s post, where we look at how to configure TCP IP settings for DNS.

1. select control panel > network connections > local area connection

note:

  • assume that name of the local area connection object is called local area connection

2. select internet protocol (tcp/ip)

3. click properties

4. select use the following ip addresses and use the following dns server addresses:

eg.

  • ip addr: 192.168.0.143
  • subnet mask: 255.255.255.0
  • default gateway: 192.168.0.1
  • preferred dns server: 192.168.0.143

note:

  • the value for preferred dns server should be same as ip address of the local area connection, in this case, it should also be 192.168.0.143
  • some may set preferred dns to 127.0.0.1 (this is the localhost), which means the pc ‘points’ to itself as the dns server, and then set the alternate dns server as the static ip address of the current pc or possibly another pc which also has an appropriately configured dns server
  • a computer which is also a domain controller (dc) for the domain usually also has dns server installed on it
  • active directory will not work properly if the pcs do not have a dns server to refer to
  • dcs are usually their own dns server, especially if there is no other pc currently in the domain

5. click advanced

6. select dns tab

7. enter appropriate value for dns suffix for this connection (eg. nfam.com)

note:

  • the value for dns suffix should be same as domain name, in this case, the value is nfam.com
  • some may leave the value for dns suffix for this connection blank
  • ensure that ‘append primary and connection specific dns suffixes’ radio button is selected
  • ensure that ‘append parent suffixes of the primary dns suffix’ checkbox is checked
  • ensure that ‘register this connection’s addresses in dns’ checkbox is checked

8. click ok

9. click ok

10. click close
