System Support Manipulate Partitions

Good day everyone, today we’ll try something a little different. Instead of learning about desktop publishing softwares, such as photoshop, dreamweaver, flash, and other similar programs, we will instead learn how to do some system support. For today, we will specifically learn how to manipulate partitions of a hard disk.

1. reboot your pc with gparted livecd in the cd or dvd drive

note: gparted livecd is freeware which allows you to non-destructively resize, move, create, and format new partitions (built in partition managers of win os or linux would normally ‘destroy’ pre-existing data on a partition if you try to resize the partitions containing the data)

2. press enter, to run default option of gparted livecd

3. press enter, to load default keymap

4. press enter, to use default language of US

5. select appropriate hard disk, which you wish to manipulate partitions of

note: you can create a new partition from unpartitioned/unallocated space, by selecting that space, and clicking new, then selecting and entering the appropriate values (choose the type of partition you want, eg. ntfs for windows os of win2k and newer, ext3 for linux os, and linux swap for linux swap file, etc)

note: you can delete a partition, by selecting that partition, and clicking delete

note: you can resize or move a partition, by selecting that partition, and clicking resize/move, then enter the appropriate values

note: you should use gparted live cd to create, format, delete, resize, or move partitions, before you install your os (builtin partition managers of win or linux os are not always as easy to use as gparted live cd)

note: each hard disk can have a max of 4 primary partitions, and at most 1 extended partition

note: the extended partition can have many logical partitions

note: windows os must be uninstalled to a primary partition, which is also set to active, for the windows os to boot properly

note: linux os can be installed to either a primary or logical partition, fo linux os to boot properly

in case you accidentally delete a partition which you actually wish to keep, there are ways you can undelete the partition. if you wish to know more, you can drop me an email asking about it
