3D Studio Max Creating a House


Using 3D Studio max to create a simple house, via box polygonal modeling.

Click Box button

1. Click Box button, under object type

Box created

2. Click and drag in top view, to set length and breadth of box, then drag upwards and click again to form the height

Change number of segments

3. Change Length Segs to 3, Width Segs to 3, Height Segs to 3, so box will consist of 3×3x3 polygons.

Show edged faces

Note: if you cannot see the separate polygons in perspective view, then press F4, to toggle view of edged faces

Select modify tab

4. Click Modify tab, to further modify selected object

Modify dimensions

5. Change Length to 200, Width to 180, and Height to 150, to adjust box to the new dimensions

Convert to editable poly

6. Right-click box, and select Convert To > Convert To Editable Poly, this changes box to editable poly, which means we can now access vertices, edges, polygons, and so on of the object

Select vertex editing mode

7. Click + button besides Editable Poly, and select vertex, to allow selection of vertices

Select center two vertices

8. In Front view, click and drag selection box around the center two vertices, to select these vertices (selected vertices are in red)

Select move tool Use move tool to move vertices upward

9. In Front view, select Move tool, and click and drag up the green upward-pointing arrow, to drag selected vertices up

10. Click anywhere blank area, to de-select current vertices

11. In Front view, click and drag selection box around the topmost, outer vertices

Select scale tool Use scale tool to scale vertices horizontally outwards

12. In Front view, select Scale tool, and click and drag to the right on the red left pointing line to scale to along horizontal axis

Use move tool to move vertices downwards

13. In Front view, select Move tool, and click and drag downward on the green upward pointing arrow, to drag selected vertices downward, until they are aligned with vertices from the second row.
